Flatwater Partners combines decades of experience in storage, handling & distribution, logistics, trading, processing, risk management and investing with wide-open thinking. 




Greg Heckman has more than 30 years of experience in the agriculture, energy and food processing industries.

Most recently, Greg was CEO of The Gavilon Group, LLC. During his time at Gavilon, Greg led the company through a period of considerable growth in both the agriculture and energy industries prior to the eventual sale of the agriculture business to Marubeni Corporation and the energy business to NGL Energy Partners. He not only set the vision and direction for the company, but was the key leader in the formation of Gavilon and the spin off of ConAgra Trade Group from ConAgra Foods in 2008.   

Prior to Gavilon, Greg was Chief Operating Officer of ConAgra Foods Commercial Products and President and COO of ConAgra Trade Group. During his 24-year career at ConAgra Foods, he ascended quickly through the organization, led the turnaround of several operating divisions and drove many key strategies including the formation of ConAgra Trade Group (the predecessor to Gavilon) in 1998.

Greg holds a Bachelor of Science in agriculture economics and marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Greg is on the Board of Directors of OCI NV, a global producer of fertilizer and chemicals. He has also been appointed to the Board of JBS Foods International, which will become effective with the company's listing on the NYSE.



John Neppl has over 25 years of experience in financial management, primarily in the agriculture, energy and food processing industries

Most recently, he was Chief Financial Officer of The Gavilon Group, LLC. There he led the organization’s accounting, treasury, risk control, business analysis, strategic planning, tax, legal and information technology. John played a critical role in key M&A transactions including the sale of Gavilon’s agricultural business to Marubeni Corporation in 2013, the separation of Gavilon’s energy business in 2013 and the ultimate sale to NGL Energy Partners, the acquisition of DeBruce Grain in 2010 and the spin-off of Gavilon from ConAgra Foods in 2008.

Prior to Gavilon, John held several senior financial management positions at ConAgra Foods, Inc, including Senior Financial Officer of ConAgra Trade Group and the ConAgra Foods Commercial Products division, as well as Assistant Corporate Controller for ConAgra Foods.

John began his career as an auditor with Deloitte & Touche. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from Creighton University. He’s currently a member of the Creighton University Heider College of Business Dean’s Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of Marian High School, heading up the Finance Committee, and serves on the board of advisors for Adams Land & Cattle Company.



Robert Wagner has more than 15 years of experience in physical and financial commodity risk management, including 10 years of senior and executive-level risk management experience.

Most recently, Robert was Group Chief Risk Officer at COFCO Agri Ltd in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was responsible for leading a team to build and provide world-class risk oversight across all of the company’s global operations.

Prior to COFCO, Robert held the Chief Risk Officer position for The Gavilon Group, LLC, where he had responsibility for both the market risk management and credit departments. Prior to Gavilon, Robert had positions of increasing responsibility at ConAgra Foods, Inc. from 2000 to 2008, including a role in Corporate Treasury where he oversaw the company’s pension investment and capital markets strategies.

Robert earned his Bachelor of Science degree in international business from Minnesota State University at Moorhead and a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from Creighton University. Robert is a member of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Finance Committee at Brownell Talbot School in Omaha.
